Scoliosis

Scoliosis (Lateral Spinal Curvature)

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often just before puberty, as well as in growing children and adolescents. As long as the spine is growing, scoliosis has the possibility of progressing. In adolescents, scoliosis has been associated with back pain, self-image issues and depression. In adults, it’s associated with back pain and even greater physical and psychological impairment. More serious complications associated with a progressed scoliosis include interference with heart and lung function.

Have You Been Screened for Scoliosis?

If you have concerns of a spinal curvature in yourself, or in your child, it’s important to understand that our doctors of chiropractic are highly trained in spinal alignment and function. We can help determine if the scoliosis is structural versus functional:

  • Structural scoliosis does not reduce with postural maneuvers.
  • Functional scoliosis is often caused by some postural problem, muscle spasm, or leg-length inequality, which can often be addressed through chiropractic care.

How Our Doctors Can Help You

Unfortunately, most healthcare providers typically follow the conventional approach of monitoring, a “wait and see” approach, to early curvatures found in patients with scoliosis, which may not be a very effective approach. This approach can lead to wearing a body brace daily for several years and possibly spinal surgery, both of which do not offer great success. Our doctors take a more active approach, utilizing spinal manipulation (adjustments), therapeutic exercise, postural training, and muscle therapies.  We may be able to help manage the condition throughout all stages of progression, and throughout life, from childhood to elderly adulthood. Treating and monitoring individuals with scoliosis is very important.
