Ulnar Tunnel Syndrome (UTS) is characterized by symptoms that develop gradually, such as muscle weakness or atrophy with loss of pinch grip strength and increasing numbness on the little finger side of the hand. Pain may or may not be present depending on which part of the nerve is compressed. As the syndrome progresses, it may become more difficult to open jars, hold objects, or coordinate the fingers during tasks such as typing or playing a musical instrument.

UTS can be caused by any repetitive motion that puts stress on your hands, wrists, forearms, shoulders, and neck. Cyclists are most commonly affected by this syndrome from the result of chronic pressure on their hands from the handlebars with the use of poor padding.

Typical treatments focus on the entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the hamate and pisiform bones of the hand. However, there are additional entrapment areas that can occur in the upper arm and forearm areas which are very often overlooked. Our knowledge of soft tissues and how the many bones of the arm and hand function can enhance our thorough examination in order to determine the exact location of the problem. Specific chiropractic adjustments can be made to the bones in your hand, arm, and neck to enhance their function. If inflammation and/or scar tissue formation is present, we offer a variety of therapies that can address the issues, such as Graston Technique and Ultrasound Therapy. Lastly, your daily activities will be discussed, as well as specific exercises that can contribute to lasting results.
